I was appointed CEO in 1989. NGC, now Fletcher Challenge owned, was listed on the NZX in 1990, the first utility to do so. I remained CEO until 2001, after which I joined the board and became Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee until 2006, when NGC was acquired by Vector.
KARORI SANCTUARY TRUST
I served as Chairman, Karori Wildlife Sanctuary Trust, and then Chairman of the Guardians of the Karori Sanctuary Trust through 2002 to 2013. During this period we completed the eradication of the pests, introduced numerous new native birds and other species, consolidate operations, raised the $16m needed for the Visitor Centre and got well into construction, and we researched and introduced the Zealandia branding.
SCIENCE AND INNOVATION
I have been involved in the governance of a wide variety of physical and biological science research organisations, including Geological and Nuclear Sciences, Crop and Food Research, Medialab South Pacific, Rissington Breedline Limited, NZX listed Wool Equities Limited, Canesis Networks (formerly the Wool Research Organisation of NZ), Keratec Limited, and the Centre for Advanced Engineering. I have also spent over four years in senior management roles in Government in innovation policy and delivery.
For over 20 years I've been involved in helping the Carter Observatory become a fantastic destination for kids to learn about science and all its possible professions.
