Defending NZ Communities from Earthquakes
As a young engineer I was involved in a wide variety of earthquake engineering projects including number of extensive earthquake risk studies in New Zealand, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. For over three years I was also the editor of the internationally relevant Bulletin of the NZ Society for Earthquake Engineering. Whilst in MBIE, I was involved in the cross-government officials committee that monitored the response to the Canterbury Earthquakes, and I assisted to ensure that the Christchurch innovation and export sector was properly supported by government.
My recent writings reflect my view that the Government’s reaction to the Canterbury Earthquakes has been narrow and far too focused on fixing earthquake risk buildings, which are in my view the least of our problems. The article on Civil Defence is more recent. The article is a submission to a Ministerial review into the CD system by the Engineers Leadership Forum, for which I was lead investigator and author.
